Description
I drove east of Phoenix and found this desolate but beautiful desert vista.
The saguaro cactus grows very slowly and can live 150 years. It can take up to 75 years for them to develop a side arm...so when you see one with several...it's been standing for many, many years.
On the way home I stopped at a unique little historic building and had a chat with two confirmed "old desert rats" who regaled me with tails of all the gold mining done in the area.
I really enjoyed that visit and promised them I'd return.

BTW...as if ordered by a casting director...the little speck in the sky to the far left is a vulture! : )

Diannah Lynch
Wonderful shot and description, Jephyr. Reminds us of the old b&w western movies which we still love!
Jephyr Art replied:
Thank you Diannah! There is such a sense of history that comes alive in that vast open desert. What doesn't show well here is how much the land rises and falls. To get to those distant cacti would take a good half hour hike or more! I'm so glad you enjoyed it...thank you again!
