Description
The mountains east of Phoenix are rife with tales of gold fever, mines, and riches and loss, as men scoured the land for the precious metal.
This photograph is taken near an area called the Lost Dutchman's Trail where there is a legend of a very rich gold mine hidden somewhere in the Superstition Mountains near Apache Junction, Arizona.
After shooting for an afternoon, I stopped and had a conversation with a couple of old "desert rats" who'd lived in the area for years. They'd even prospected and pointed to mines in the area and spoke about the HUGE profits those early miners had made.
They also claimed that 75% of the gold in the area is still waiting to be found.
As they spoke I felt the "fever" grow...and understood how men could spend their days toiling to dig for riches in the ground!

Jephyr, the desert has always, and will always be a spiritual place for me. It was my first subject as a painter at five, tho I had never been. I love this wonderful scene with saguaros reaching toward the sky. F/L.
